World Hazelnut Export Market
Azerbaijani hazelnut companies are important players in the world raw hazelnut export market, and their main destinations are European, North American, and East Asian countries. In this report, Nutsoil LLC, one of the largest hazelnut processors and exporters in Azerbaijan, aims to highlight the recent trends in a global hazelnut market and discuss major trading partners.
Starting from 2015, the total raw, in shell (HS: 080221) hazelnut export exports followed a decreasing trend in terms of both export quantity and export value. The total export quantity decreased from 50 thousand tons in 2015 to 32 thousand tons in 2018. Similarly, the export value of this market decreased from USD 171 million in 2015 to USD 107 million in 2018. In terms of export value, raw, in shell hazelnut export market was considered very concentrated, since the total market share of Top 5 exporters was 83%. The main exporters were from North America, the EU and Asia. In terms of import value, raw, in shell hazelnut import market was also very concentrated, since the total market share of Top 5 importers was 72% in 2018, which were from North America, the EU and Asia.

The total raw, shelled hazelnut (HS: 080222) export market value has shrunk since 2015. The total export quantity of this product followed an increasing trend; first rose from 213 thousand tons in 2015 to 253 thousand tons in 2017, and then slightly decreased to 251 thousand tons in 2018. However, its total export value gradually decreased from USD 2,337 million in 2015 to USD 1,561 million in 2018. In general, a decrease in value and a growth of volume indicates a price reduction of this product between 2015 and 2018. Raw, shelled hazelnut export market was considered very concentrated, since in terms of export value, the total market share of Top 5 exporters was 91%. The main exporters were from South America, the EU, the Caucasus, as well as Turkey. It is worth mentioning that Azerbaijani high-quality hazelnuts had a significant market share among these exporting countries. In terms of import value, raw, shelled hazelnut import market was also concentrated, since the total market share of Top 5 importers was 63% in 2018, which were mainly from the EU, as well as Russia.

In compare to the raw hazelnut export market, the total roasted hazelnut kernel (HS: 200819) export market increased in terms of both value and quantity between two periods. Its export quantity gradually increased from 760 thousand tons in 2015 to 929 thousand tons in 2018. Although the export value decreased from USD 4,487 million in 2015 to USD 4,141 million in 2016, it jumped to USD 4,670 million in 2018. Unlikely to the raw hazelnut export market, this market was not very concentrated, in terms of export value. The total market share of Top 5 exporters was 55%. The main exporters were from North America, the EU, Asia, as well as Turkey. In terms of import value, roasted hazelnut kernel import market was not considered as concentrated as the raw hazelnut market. The total market share of Top 5 importers was only 42% in 2018, which were from North America, the EU and Asia.
